We are extremely delighted to welcome our special guest Mr. Levi Lowrey. Levi Lowrey is a fiddler, guitarist, and singer-songwriter who is currently touring nationwide with Sonia Leigh, Nic Cowan and the Zac Brown Band. The "Breaking Southern Ground" tour features all of the artists on the Southern Ground record label, which is the label of Zac Brown's Academy of Country Music Award-winning southern rock group--the Zac Brown Band.

Levi Lowrey comes from a musical background. His great-great-grandfather was influential in the development of bluegrass. Lowrey began playing the violin in the sixth grade. He was playing bluegrass in the seventh grade. By high school he was singing and before long he was playing guitar and writing his own songs. After a recent performance in New York City, an Atlantic Records executive approached Lowrey saying "I had to meet you. You silenced a New York City crowd."

MY INTERVIEW WITH J.D. SOUTHER

Ladies and gentlemen, my J. D. Souther appreciation began with his songwriting. It's how a good song is born and so begins my adventure. After becoming exposed to his great songwriting, I sought out to learn about this man who had written so many great songs that have become a part of our collective musical memory and experiences: "Only Lonely," "Best of My Love," "New Kid in Town," and "Heartache Tonight" to name a few. He had a total of four great albums of his own before releasing his fifth record, his first effort in 24 years.

I have hosted a radio program since my 22nd birthday. I only interview people I believe in. I play what music I like. I look at myself as a regular fella with an intense admiration for great artists. We have heard from listeners all around the world, people from all walks of life. We even sometimes hear from people who barely speak English. They are all there to hear the great music. I've been honored and humbled to interview the likes of my favorite all-time artist Fats Domino, as well as other legends like Michael McDonald, Woody Allen, Harry Connick, Maya Angelou, David Letterman's CBS Orchestra, Little Feat, Paul McCartney's entire band and many others. Any self-respecting rock 'n roll documentarian would jump to interview someone that pens songs like J. D. Souther does. A couple of years ago, I wrote a note to a journalist who had written an article on Mr. Souther. I asked what my chances were. I was informed an interview would be unlikely, as Souther prefers to let the songs speak for him...but, good luck! Researching his history only made me want to do the interview more.

Like J. D. Souther, I have great respect for people who master their instruments. I had interviewed his pianist, Chris Walters, who is a great composer as well. On two occasions, I interviewed Souther's bassist Jim Mayer, who is also a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band (J. D. Souther has co-written two songs with Buffett.) Jim has been a great inspiration and source of motivation to me as a person. I knew the histories of the other members of J.D.'s band also. Those guys are the cats!

Chris Walters and Jim Mayer were talking to me after a show. They had just performed a Christmas concert with Jim's brother Peter Mayer. Chris Walters said to me, "You know who you should interview? J. D. Souther!" Jim agreed with him. I had heard Souther was releasing a brand new album. I tried to contain my excitement.

I had listened to his new album "If the World Was You," and was thoroughly infatuated with the melodies. I obviously listen to a ton of records, and this one truly shined. I remember telling my listeners it was the best album I had heard that year. I focused my ears on it, listening to all of the tracks repeatedly. Cuban rhythms, great lyrics, beautiful horn parts, and the band--Jeff Coffin! Bela Fleck! What a record! After waiting some time, I decided to write to J. D. Souther's representatives. They told me he was accepting my interview invitation and it would be held at the venue in Decatur, Georgia. J. D. Souther would be performing solo. I was politely, but firmly informed to keep the interview under 15 minutes. I got there bringing along a good friend of mine. As it turned out, due to complications that happen to any musician while on the road, Souther was not there. A few minutes later I was on the phone with his road manager who asked me if I would consider coming to the Ritz-Carlton to do the interview. No problem. I will always associate the Ritz with so many of my favorite musical memories. (Note to readers: You really must see Cameron Crowe's film "Almost Famous." Nothing says rock 'n roll like room service.)

I arrived and waited in the lobby. Mr. Souther walked over to me and greeted me really warmly. I was prepared to be professional and respectfully take my 15 minutes. He said, "Well, let's eat first! Are you guys hungry?" Over an hour later we were enjoying a leisurely dinner, with no official or recorded "interview" in sight. I was in awe by so many of his stories. He casually talked about his life, travels and the people he knew and had worked with. Names of the greats like his old roommates, Glenn Frey and Jackson Browne (Jackson Browne!) rolled off of his tongue while he recalled interesting tidbits. Humor, wit and charm permeated his conversation. As we ate our fish, I decided it was time to start the interview. It wasn't what you would call a formal interview. We were still eating while it was recording. I have struggled to find the right word to describe J. D. The one that seems to best describe him is "cool." After our dinner, J. D. said he would be hungry later and wanted to know if we wanted to hit the town in Buckhead and get sushi after the concert. I smiled to myself when remembering the 15 minutes I had been granted. J. D. Souther is as down-to-earth as you can imagine.

Down-to-earth as he is, make no mistake about it. J. D. Souther is a star. The show was great. J. D. Souther performed his songs on guitar and piano. Earlier, we discussed our mutual love for old songs and he decided he would work one in for me. The man at the venue said it may have been the most packed he had ever seen the room and believe me I have seen that place packed! I couldn't find a seat and stood the entire show. Nobody left until the very end. After the concert, J. D. Souther walked over to me and said, "You guys should come up to Nashville to see me perform with the entire band. It's going to be a good one." Then he said, "I assume you have a record player. I want to give you something before you go. You have to listen to the record the right way." He had a lot of people to talk to, so I did my best to be low key. I like to stay out of the way. Believe me; it is key to gaining respect from an entertainer. J. D. is such a gentleman; he didn't want to give me the record in front of anyone, so he waited. He has a lot of class. As we drove away, I remember how happy I felt about the whole evening--the concert, meeting him, the interview. Then my phone rang and it was his road manager. He said "How far away are you? Turn around! J. D. forgot to give you the vinyl!" I certainly hadn't forgotten, but didn't want to remind him because I'm sensitive about asking for things. It really impressed me how thoughtful he was. He gave me the wax after signing the cover.

When my business partner Jeff Pike and I listened to the recorded interview, we decided we were glad this was the way the interview was done. It was honest. We liked hearing us enjoy our dinner and the subtle imperfections on the recording. It was real. I remember talking to his former publicist Laurie who gushed about how happy she was that I got to interview him, and how excited she was to hear the radio special. This would be the first of many such comments I would hear from those who love his music (and him.) After the show was broadcast, the listeners thought it was honest too, but my adventure wasn't over. I accepted his invitation to go to Nashville, Tennessee. This may seem strange, but one of the best parts was talking to J.D.'s fans that were in line in front of the Belcourt. Everyone was so enthusiastic. There was energy as the people waited for the doors to open. I remember a lady who questioned me on my origin. Then she told me, "I love J. D. Souther." It made me remember why I have the show and what makes it fun. It was really cool to see people who were true music fans. (By the way, thank you lady for calling me "cute.")

I got to see J. D. Souther performing with his band: Rod McGaha on trumpet, Jeff Coffin on saxophone, Jim Mayer on bass, Chris Walters on piano and James White on drums are all fabulous musicians. Hearing his song "Rain" performed with his entire band burned the haunting melody into my mind. The memory of the performance of "Journey Down the Nile" is also vivid. It was a very unforgettable concert. I got to meet the band and give them and J. D. copies of the radio special in person. As we started to leave, J. D. reminded me of the sushi for the next time he would be in Atlanta.

I get asked a lot who my favorite interview has been. How can I ever pick just one? However, J. D. Souther will always be one I remember with fondness. Not just because he is a legend or because of his incredible songwriting, but because he is so...cool. I am pleased ASCAP is giving him the Golden Note Award. I don't really entirely understand what is going on with music right now, but it is reassuring to hear a truly great songwriter is being properly honored. He deserves the award. I am humbled to have met and interviewed him.

Our special guest, Josh Kear is a Grammy Award Winning songwriter. Josh Kear also has an album of original Island songs entitled "Blue Pearl Paradise." In 2007, three songs co-written with Kear entered the country charts in 2007: "Bama Breeze" by Jimmy Buffett (written with Chris Tompkins and Mark Irwin), "That's How They Do It in Dixie" by Hank Williams, Jr. and "Before He Cheats" by Carrie Underwood. On November 7, 2007, "Before He Cheats" won the Single of the Year Award at the Country Music Association Awards. Three months later, it won the Grammy Award for Best Country Song, giving him a Grammy win.

Ladies and gentlemen, I apologize for not writing on here more frequently. I have been so busy! I never got to tell you folks about our last night in Pensacola Beach, Florida. You know how people don't swim in the ocean at night? That's probably a good thing. Herr Benjamin and I were fishing for the big ones while wading out waist deep. It's dark and feel something brushing against my leg. Earlier in the evening we saw a HUGE shark swimming out, but as you can tell we are a couple of boys with no common sense. After catching a few crabs Benji decides to go get this ultra bright light. Lo and behold we were swimming in shark infested water. If you are guessing this is the part of the script where we get out... The answer is no. For some reason, we decide to continue fishing for the big ones. I had it in my mind to catch a shark. I was told this was foolish. You only live twice. As fate would have it, we got our wish! I learned something. Sharks do not like to be caught.

On the way back we decided to go to the Hank Williams Museum. I recorded an interview with Beth Petty the manager of the museum. We called it Hats Off to Hank. Some of you got to hear it. All in all it was a good trip.

It's kind of hard to write this blog because of how excited I am. In my last "journal-type" entry I foreshadowed that Benny Spellman lived in Pensacola. Upon returning to Georgia I got a call that Mr. Spellman had received my letter and would like to do an interview the next time I am in Pensacola. (Which by the way will be soon!) I will be stopping in to interview him on my way to New Orleans!

It's been a wild few days. Many of you know my all time favorite musician is Fats Domino. I was considerably surprised to pick up my phone with "Antoine Domino" on the caller ID. The next morning I was wakened up with "Harry Connick" on my caller ID. Then I hear back from Mungo Jerry, Santo & Johnny and Pat Metheny. All of these things are looking good. We are about to hit our sixth year of broadcasting. Stay tuned because there is plenty more coming! We will make it to a seventh year, Lord willing!

We're taking you to Montgomery, Alabama for our special on the late, great Hank Williams. Hank Williams is known as the Father of Contemporary Country Music. Born on September 17, 1923 in Mount Olive, Alabama, Hank Williams began playing music after his mother gave him a guitar at 8 years old. Hank Williams learned his singing style in part from a blues street singer named Rufus "Teetot" Payne. Hank Williams went on to perform across the United States and in many other countries. He had many hit songs and was a favorite on radio and television. He was and perhaps is the greatest country star of all times.

Hank Williams passed away on January 1, 1953. Yet Hank Williams music continues to get new fans. His songs are known by everyone. You cannot get much more "American" in music than Hank Williams. His songs hav been covered by countless musicians. Even if they do not know the name Hank Williams, people from around the globe know his songs..."Your Cheatin' Heart," "There's a Tear in My Beer," "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," "Jambalaya," "I'll Never Get Out of This World Alive," and of course "Hey Good Lookin'."

Hank Williams' legacy lives on at the Hank Williams Museum in beautiful Montgomery, Alabama. On this episode we are joined by Beth Petty, Manager of the Hank Williams Museum. It is a museum filled with photographs, press clippings, and numerous personal artifacts belonging to the late Hank Williams including his personal Nudie suits, instruments and many fascinating exhibits.

Greetings from Florida

Greets Gentle Readers,

I sit in my hotel room in sunny, beautiful Pensacola Beach! Yesterday was the first day and I have been enjoying myself. I am with my confederate Mr. Ben Eldridge. Every day is a holiday, every meal is a feast.
Not too long ago he asked me, "Do you want to go to Florida for a few days?" (No pause). "Yes." No brainer. A lot has happened recently, my business partner Jeff Pike and I recently interviewed Sir Paul McCartney's ENTIRE band in 24 hours. It was a tremendous experience, and we look forward to presenting those shows to you soon.

After a lovely drive down on almost zero sleep we arrived and found our bearings. After a beer and a Caesar salad with steak from a scantly clad waitress we decided to head back to the room for some libations. (Salad was so-so). I would like to take a moment to endorse a product I agree with wholeheartedly, the new Grapefruit Perrier! Absolutely wonderful, and can be mixed with Bombay Sapphire Gin to make a really stellar cocktail with ZERO carbohydrates. After a few of these, I felt ready to take on the first day. Wading out into the ocean we tried our hand at the fish and ended up empty handed. After discussing the eternal verities, I was contacted by a Georgia musician who called about a "fire" that had been ignited by a conglomeration of musician wife/significant others. Rather than being irritated, I actually chuckled a little. Get a life! My official statement--the sexual orientation of myself, the artists I interview or work with in a professional capacity is irrelevent. For the record, I like females. Anyone else's orientation is none of my business...Thank you and have a good everything. :) For those who have spent considerable time mulling over my friendships and business relationships, I would like to suggest you find something to fill your time.
As the Christopher Cross song "Sailing" went through my head, I called it a day.

Second day, had a really good breakfast of omelettes and was already fishing bright and early. Caught one fish. Let 'em go, it was small. Saw lots of sting rays. There's always tomorrow! Swam quite a good bit and then made tracks for Panama City Beach. Once there, we went to the home of Mr. Gene Mitchell of Sailor Boy Records/Sailor Boy Publishing. Gene Mitchell is the absolute best writer of this genre of music known as "Trop Rock." Many of his songs could be covered by someone like Kenny Chesney, who is actually doing island music. I love Jimmy Buffett, but I would not call him a "Trop Rock" artist. Anyhow, Mr. Mitchell showed us around his house...the decoration was really first class, unique and charming. Then we recorded an interview with acoustic/vocal performance. He played 5 songs off of his new album "Island Swing" and also my all time favorite Gene Mitchell song "Make Mine a Pina Colada." Listen to the upcoming Gene Mitchell special for the story on that song and why I like it. It could be a hit in Kenny Chesney or George Strait's hand. We then went with Gene Mitchell to Margaritaville Cafe Panama City Beach where he performed. We shared Conch Fritters (I believe Margaritaville's are the best, although many have tried to argue with me) and I ordered the Jerk Chicken, which was pretty good! Ben had the Taco Salad and seemed to be pleased. Ben and I had a good time at observing the people and commenting on how people react and interact with one another. He's a very introspective cat. I give myself a compliment on carefully selecting good friends. We headed back to Pensacola Beach. Had some more gin and rum and we continued to talk reflectively. Tomorrow we will rise early for fishing first thing in the morning. That is our only plan.
I read the New Orleans legend Benny Spellman was just inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame. I found out he lives at an assisted living home in.....Pensacola.... One Love.

Mac McAnally: A Retrospective (Part 3 of 3)

On the third and final part of our series, Mac McAnally: A Retrospective we conclude our look at one of the most respected all around musicians in Nashville, one of the most multi-talented artists in music. The interview with Mac McAnally discusses his discography, (11 albums since his debut “Mac McAnally” in 1977) the most recent “Down By the River” on Show Dog Records. However, in addition to McAnally’s records and intimate performances, his songs have been interpreted by some of the greats of our time including Hank Williams, Jr., Nancy Griffith, Chris LeDoux and many others. Most recently, his song “Down the Road,” was recorded by country superstar Kenny Chesney. The number 1 song was recorded as a duet featuring both Chesney and McAnally. Chesney said of the song and McAnally, “I am really happy about having a No. 1 with my very good friend and frankly, one of my songwriting heroes.”
In addition to being a hit songwriter and singer, McAnally has produced many albums and has played sessions ranging from George Strait, Joan Baez, Lyle Lovett, Wayne Newton, Billy Joel and everyone in between. He has been closely associated and friends with Jimmy Buffett for thirty years and is a touring and recording member of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band.

Time After Island Time Proudly Presents our special guest Mac McAnally. Mac McAnally is an entertainer, storyteller, guitarist, pianist, producer, and recording artist. Mac McAnally is a country music singer-songwriter, an in-demand session musician and record producer. McAnally has released 11 albums, his most recent “Down By the River” on Show Dog Records may be his most diverse and creative release to date.

McAnally’s credits are numerous. In the Spring of 2009, country superstar Kenny Chesney cut Mac McAnally’s song “Down the Road” as a duet with McAnally. Chesney’s version of the song became McAnally’s first number one song as a recording artist and his sixth as a songwriter. McAnally has also produced artists like Ricky Skaggs, Chris LeDoux, the bands Little Feat and Sawyer Brown as well as Jimmy Buffett. Mac McAnally has been a member and fan favorite of Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer Band for many years, writing and co-writing many of Buffett’s best songs.

Ilo Ferreira special airing worldwide on Time After Island Time

On this episode we welcome Ilo Ferreira, a singer-songwriter of immense talent. Ilo Ferreira is from a group of islands off of the coast of West Africa that form the nation of Cape Verde. Cape Verde has a strong Portuguese influence and a vibrant music scene. It was in 2006 when singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and friends were in Cape Verde hoping to meet the legendary singer of Morna, Cesaria Evora. Joining him on this adventure was Chris Blackwell of Island Records who made Bob Marley world famous, Tom Freston of MTV renown and author and entertainment executive Bill Flanagan.
One night at a Cape Verde restaurant, Ilo Ferreira got onto the small stage to sing and play his guitar. Jimmy Buffett and his friends became enamored with the young singer, not just by his voice and performance, but also by his original songs. On September 8, 2007 Jimmy Buffett welcomed Ilo Ferreira to perform as special guest of Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band at the Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The thousands in attendance responded immediately to Ilo Ferreira. In January of 2008 he began recording songs produced by Tony Brown and Coral Reefer Mac McAnally.
Now Ilo Ferreira is performing in the United States and he joins us to talk about his life and his debut EP entitled "Ilo" available on Mailboat Records. This interview was recorded on June 26, 2009 in Boston, Massachusetts the city where Ilo was first heard by an American audience. Corazon Aquino passes away

Corazon Aquino, the former President of the Philippines has passed away. It seems like we have lost a lot of truly great people...I still cannot believe Walter Cronkite is no longer with us.

Some of you may know that I spent a large chunk of my formative years in the Republic of the Philippines. The Philippines certainly made a big impact on my life. I got to see a lot of things most Americans never get to see. That's a good thing and a bad thing. I saw a lot of beauty, but also a lot of sadness. The Philippine Islands and the Filipino people will always be in my heart.

Because of some of the corruption in the Philippines, I remember being exposed to a lot of violence and knowing very early on the difference between good and evil. Corazon Aquino was always one of the good ones. She did a lot for the Philippines. People Power!

I have been approved by the powers that be to produce a special on the Honolulu Surf Museum in Honolulu, Hawaii. Our special guest is going to be the curator of the museum Mr. Mark Fragale. It should be exciting! The museum is located inside the restaurant Jimmy Buffett's at the Beachcomber. It should be an interesting episode of TAIT.

Speaking of Mr. Buffett, he was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, which is turning out to be a really great show. He played "Margaritaville," but was backed by the Roots in addition to MacDonald, McAnally and Shakoor. It was interesting to hear the song played with Sousaphone.

Mr. Buffett mentioned an album coming in November 2009. The title? Buffet Hotel. One t. I have a feeling a lot of people are not going to like that title, but I happen to really like it. Apparently there is a hotel in Timbuktu, Mali called Buffet Hotel. I hope this album is similar to "Far Side of the World." I've never met Buffett, but I think the continent of Africa is a big influence on him. "Far Side of the World" was a wonderful album, steeped in mystique, adventure, literature and the exotic. It had an indescribable "feel" to it. I looked at it as a Buffettized version of Paul Simon's "Graceland." Made me fantasize about some mysterious, romantic Shangri-la.

I hope some of you got to listen to my interview with Cesaria Evora and you are turned on to Morna. It is beautiful and there is nothing like it!

Recording the Ilo Ferreira special

Aloha folks. This afternoon I got to record an incredible in-depth interview with Vic Latham. Some of you may not know who Latham is. He lived quite a life. He was one of the original Key West legends who owned the famed Full Moon Saloon. He had some great stories and was really honest about the drinking and the Key West boogey. He had quite a claim to fame. He said he shared Jimmy Buffett's first joint in New Orleans. His words, not mine! He knew Mr. Buffett from circa 1965 or 1966...the French Quarter days. Boy, did he have some stories.

We began producing the Ilo Ferreira special. Ilo Ferreira is a singer-songwriter and guitarist whom Jimmy Buffett, Chris Blackwell and Tom Freston (the Godfather of MTV) met in Cape Verde off of the West Coast of Africa. They were trying to meet Cesária Évora, who was this week's guest on TAIT. Man, the Ilo special is a long time coming. I am very enthused. We have had some really big cheeses express interest in it, including Chris Blackwell of Island Records...yes, THE Chris Blackwell. The man who brought reggae and Bob Marley to the world. I am really humbled by our little show. I have to say I am proud it is growing so much. There was one person who didn't want this show to happen. I think Ilo will be glad it was produced. What a wonderful fellow. I am proud of him and happy that fate has stepped in and seen him through. Check out his EP "Ilo" on Mailboat Records, it's a hot plate!

I bought a roasted chicken, the entire bird and we ate it in honor of Ilo. Listen in and find out why. We ate the whole chicken.

Jeff and I also spent a long time cataloging all of our past episodes. We are trying to keep better records. We feel like TAIT is a musical artifact, so we are trying to keep the archives accurate and complete. At some point, we hope to archive every episode online to allow you all to listen for free to any show. After all, TAIT is a global entertainment solution for a changing world.

The Cesária Évora special

Cesária Évora , "the barefoot diva" is an internationally famous singer of Morna. For those of you unfamiliar with morna, it is a genre of music and dance from Cape Verde. The Cape Verde is an island nation found off of the Western Coast of Africa.Cape Verdean music incorporates Portugese, Caribbean, African and Brazilian influences. Morna is the national music of Cape Verde. The history of Morna goes all the way back to the 18th century and is typically sung in Cape Verdean Creole.

Many of you listeners have become familiar with a rising star named Ilo Ferreira also hailing from Cape Verde. Ilo was discovered in part because of Cesária Évora. Singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and friends had been exploring the incredible music scene in the African country of Mali. On the way back home they wanted to meet the legendary Cesária Évora. After being welcome in Évora's home, she never came downstairs to meet the group, so instead they decided to scout for local music. It was here Jimmy Buffett met Ilo Ferreira.

This vantage point of our travel on the songlines is with Cesária Évora, the most famous singer of Morna. Along with enchanting music from far sides of the world as well as some songs you may know by heart, with the help of her translator, we will hear the story of Cesária Évora, loved in France, Turkey, the United States, parts of the Caribbean and throughout the world.

Tim Krekel Special

This is our memorial to Tim Krekel, whom we recently lost to cancer. Tim Krekel was a lifelong musician, born in 1950 in Louisville, Kentucky. A wonderful guitarist and a soulful singer, Tim Krekel was known for his warm smile and incredible songs. Tim enjoyed living and in his last days was heard describing his experiences as "A most wonderful life." He certainly had great stories of a long musical career that spanned the globe and included being a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band on two occasions and penning hit chart-topping songs for artists like Martina McBride, Patty Loveless and Crystal Gayle. His wonderful songs drew attention from people like Rick Nelson, Jerry Reed and many other musical legends. Tim cut eight albums of his own.

The interview we are going to play for you has never been heard until now. We play it in memory of Tim Krekel. It was recorded on July 19, 2008.

Tim Krekel Special

Tim Krekel was a guitarist, singer and songwriter. Tim was born in Louisville, Kentucky on October 10, 1950. He lived in New York City and Nashville, Tennessee, but the love for his hometown brought him back to Louisville. Tim passed away on June 24, 2009.

He had 8 solo albums to his credit, and many of his songs were very successful in the hands of artists ranging from Crystal Gayle, Alan Jackson, Martina McBride, Delbert McClinton and others. Tim Krekel was very respected as a guitar player and his skills at the instrument won him the praise of Rolling Stone magazine. Tim Krekel was a musician his entire life. He began his professional career playing guitar for 35 cents at 13 years old. Tim Krekel was a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, played guitar on the Son of a Son of a Sailor album and co-wrote two songs with Buffett.

Everyone agreed that in addition to his incredible talent, what gave Krekel so many friends was his loving personality. You get a strong sense of his kind spirit in this interview, recorded July 19, 2008 in Roswell, Georgia. We invite you to listen in to hear Tim's music and words. Our special guest Dave Brogan was born in Fresno, California. He ended up in the band Animal Liberation Orchestra (ALO) where he plays the drums, writes songs and sometimes sings. He started recording his solo album in January of 2008. Dave Brogan describes himself as "a guy from the rural suburbs that learned Okie folk songs from his grandpa and rocked the 'quads' in high school drum line, went and got a music degree in college and spent the rest of his life trying to write a good song."

The Neil Halstead Special
On this episode of Time After Island Time we meet a singer-songwriter from an island lying northwest of continental Europe. His name is Neil Halstead and Time Out (UK) called Halstead "one of Britain's greatest songwriters." NME said "the man is a legend." Towards the end of the 90's Neil started a band called Slowdive, after that band parted ways, he formed the band Mojave 3, at the heart of both of these bands was Neil Halstead a singer, songwriter and instrumentalist we feel very pleased to welcome as our special guest. Halstead decided to branch out on his own and record a solo album released on Brushfire Records entitled “Oh! Mighty Engine!” which will be the focus of this episode.
Neil Halstead’s album was recorded both in Los Angeles, California and in his hometown of Cornwall, England. According to Emmett Malloy, co-founder of Brushfire Records, “He surfed in the mornings and drank beer and recorded with various friends in the evening.” Malloy went on to say, “Neil is an old soul and his newest solo record is exactly who he is. Welcoming, warm, clever and kind.”

Jake Shimabukuro Unplugged part 1 & 2

After Jake played George Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on his ukulele on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Conan got out of his chair and said it was one of the best things he had ever seen in the history of his show.

Jake has been making a name for himself--appearing in front of audiences in America and Japan of up to 50,000 people. The stunning video of Jake performing While My Guitar Gently Weeps has an incredible 3 million PLUS views on YouTube. He is amazing! Needless to say I am a fan. I found myself sitting on the couch at the Four Season's hotel in Buckhead talking in great detail to Jake. He's a terrific guy and gave the most in-depth interview I have ever heard him do. It was very intimate. Then he took out his instrument and performed a little concert just for me. It was very moving...

But upon reflection...it's so much more than that. Through the powers of the show I was able to record and share with you all. It wasn't just for me, it's for anyone who wants to listen in. I hope you enjoy...wherever you are in the world.

Our special guest on this episode of Time After Island Time is an author in addition to being a musician. His name is Brad Manard and along with Captain Tony Tarracino he penned the book Life Lessons of a Legend, which is the story of Captain Tony sometimes known as the Salt of Key West. So what was it that made Captain Tony so special? What did he do? I think an easier question would be what did Captain Tony not do. As a young man he was a gambler who fled to New Jersey from the Mob. In his life he was a fishing and charter boat captain in Key West. He owned Captain Tony’s Saloon located on Greene Street in Key West—the oldest bar in Florida. His best friends included Tennessee William, Truman Capote, Shel Silverstein and Mel Fisher…just to name a few. The 1970s movie Cuba Crossing was made about his trip to Cuba to transport government assassins. Captain Tony was the surrogate father of singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and the inspiration behind his classic song “Last Mango in Paris.” Captain Tony was elected mayor of Key West in 1989 at 73 years old. Captain Tony was also a very prolific man. He fathered 13 children with 50 years separating the oldest and youngest child. Most importantly I believe Captain Tony was a storyteller. Perhaps one of the best and everyone who met him loved him. This episode of Time After Island Time is about the book Life Lessons of a Legend, which is the Captain Tony story. The special guest Brad Manard was described by Captain Tony as the “Michelangelo of Keys literature.” In addition to telling you the story of the writing of this book, this episode is in memorial to Captain Tony Tarracino—a man who touched everyone who met him. Internationally Renowned Painter William Buffett is a special guest on Time After Island Time

Our special guest William Buffett is an artist whose paintings of New Orleans Jazz musicians and tropical and coastal landscapes have been reproduced and made popular around the world. William Buffett was born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1935 and graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Southern California. The shores of the Pacific Ocean with picturesque palm trees and glimpses of the sea have always dominated his artwork. He became interested in New Orleans Jazz in his youth and New Orleans jazz players went on to become a lasting subject in his paintings.

Along with plenty of music, it is our pleasure to feature an interview with William Buffett--an artistic genius with something to say. Looking at his paintings you can almost feel the breezes of the ocean or hear the sounds of the jazz bands down in New Orleans. She also served as Buffett's fan relations person, where she answered all of Buffett's correspondence. Carol Shaughnessy was also engaged to Key West legend Phil Clark, the man who inspired Jimmy Buffett's celebrated song "A Pirate Looks at Forty." With Lorian Hemingway, Carol Shaughnessy is co-director of the Lorian Hemingway Short Story Competition. Carol Shaughnessy has chosen the adventurous route in life, whether serving as a former director of Key West's Hemingway Days festivals, writing and recording the stories of so many fascinating residents of the Conch Republic or her current role as owner of the public relations firm Shaughnessy & Friends.

On this four part series we are chronicling the history of the very first Jimmy Buffett fan club. The original club was established 20 years ago and called the Atlanta Parrot Head Club, which resulted in the birth of a Parrot Head Nation, an international network of Parrot Head Clubs with Buffett fans joining not only for recreation, but also to give back to their local communities, volunteer and raise money for charitable organizations.
On this episode, we will be exploring the third era—1999-2003, the formative years where the groundwork was laid for the current international Parrot Head movement. During this era, a new genre of music called “trop rock” was rising into the public consciousness. Inspired by not only the caribbean but also the work of Jimmy Buffett—artists like Jim Morris, Sunny Jim and St. Somewhere gained dedicated fans in large part due to the Parrot Head Nation and their gatherings called “Flockings.”
As the Parrot Head Nation continued to grow, Jimmy Buffett continued performing and recording and expanding his businesses with his own record label, Mailboat Records, more Margaritaville Cafes and stores and even an internet radio station.
The clubs that were formed over the previous era matured and grew and new clubs solidified around the world. The annual gathering of Parrot Heads known as Meeting of the Minds had moved from New Orleans to Key West and in 1999 attendance, fundraising, and community service hours reached an all-time high. As the Parrot Head madness continued flourishing and spreading, a craving for more flockings resulted in more regional events with names like Stars on the Water, Fins to the Left, Phlocking of the Phaithful, Stars Fell on Alabama and others. Back home in Atlanta, the Atlanta Parrot Head Club volunteers became a major factor in the success of the Atlanta 2-day Breast Cancer Walk, and an Atlanta Parrot Head cruise was established which continues to break records in attendance and raising money for Atlanta Breast Cancer Research. The Parrot Head nation was alive and well.

On this episode of Time After Island Time we are exploring the second era of the Parrot Head Nation, the years 1994-1998, what we will refer to as the "explosion." Not only did the Parrot Head Nation grow in numbers, but also in activity. Throughout the second era, Parrot Head gatherings, known as "flockings" flourished. Official and organized Parrot Headism had spread from Atlanta to other areas and as the Atlanta Parrot Head Club's founder Scott Nickerson mentioned in part one--back in 1992, the first annual meeting of club members had taken place in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. The largest event, Meeting of the Minds (or MOTM) continued to be held annually in New Orleans until the 1998 MOTM, "Back to the Island," which was held in Key West, Florida.

As the Parrot Head Nation swelled, so did Jimmy Buffett in his career as a performer, recording artist and author--providing his fans with the magic of the music, which caused reason for congregation and celebration. In May of 1994, Jimmy Buffett released "Fruitcakes" his first studio album in 5 years. Buffett's eager fans clamored for the album, causing it to reach #5 on the Billboard 200 album chart. The music video of the "Fruitcakes" single was filmed in Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida featuring many members of the Atlanta Parrot Head Club. Ever the prolific songwriter, Buffett would follow this with the 1995 literature-inspired "Barometer Soup," released in 1995. 1996 brought an acoustic-based album entitled "Banana Wind," and "Christmas Island," his first holiday album. Literary inspiration found Buffett collaborating with best-selling author Herman Wouk in a musical based on Wouk's 1965 novel, "Don't Stop the Carnival." Working as the sole songwriter, Buffett wrote all of the songs and released an accompanying album by the same title. Amidst five years of successful concert tours and endless sold-out shows to an ever-growing Parrot Head Nation, Buffett would close out this era with a look back at his life of adventure, travel, creativity and music with an autobiography and travelogue entitled "A Pirate Looks at Fifty." The book went straight to #1 on the New York Times Best-Seller non-fiction list.

It was in the early part of 1989 when Scott Nickerson got the idea to start the very first Parrot Head Club--The Atlanta Parrot Head Club. Scott met so many interesting people in the parking lot before Buffett concerts that he decided he wanted to enjoy the camraderie throughout the year. On April 1, 1989 Scott and about 15 others met at Chastain Park, where so many legendary Buffett concerts had been held. This was the first Parrot Head Club meeting, the Birth of a Parrot Head Nation. Scott never dreamed of what would result 20 years later--a total of $13 million in contributions and almost 2 million volunteer hours.

The time and place were right. Maintaining and building a steady interest and love for Jimmy Buffett's music was an Atlanta musician named Jeff Pike. In the years preceding the conception of the club, Jeff was performed at bars like Pufferbelly's and the Checkered Parrot. Jeff noticed an intense appreciation and request for Jimmy Buffett's songs. He sought to learn the more obscure songs and developed a steady following.

By 1989, Buffett was getting bigger than ever. Buffett released Tales from Margaritaville, his best-selling collection of short stories and Off to See the Lizard, the first album with his brand new band. 1989 was the year and Atlanta was the place. The magic of the music brought the fans together.

On this episode of Time After Island Time, we welcome Scott Nickerson and Jeff Pike who in addition to witnessing the early days of the Parrot Head Nation, performed in the duo A1A: The Official and Original Jimmy Buffett Tribute Show...the only band to ever be recognized by Jimmy Buffett himself. Legendary Singer-Songwriter J. D. Souther joined us for a conversation at the Ritz-Carlton in Atlanta, Georgia. Souther is perhaps best known for his songwriting. He has co-written and written songs for the Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Warren Zevon, Jimmy Buffett and others. J. D. Souther has also recorded five albums of his own. In 1979 he had a hit with his Roy Orbison influenced song "You're Only Lonely." His music has been covered by too many artists to name and his vocals have been heard on many popular recordings including his duet with James Taylor, which he co-wrote, "Her Town Too."
In this rare interview, J. D. Souther joined us to talk about his new album, "If the World Was You," which is his first release in 25 years. We invite everyone to tune in to hear J. D. On this episode we meet Greg Cohen, bassist with the Woody Allen & Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band. Cohen is an artist known for not only his humbleness, but also his incredible knowledge of music. Born in Los Angeles, his love for music began early and by 1978 he began working with the legendary Tom Waits.

In 1984 Cohen ended up in New York, where he currently lives. His work has ranged from producing, composing, arranging and performing in public. His bass playing has been featured on artists ranging from Elvis Costello, Willie Nelson, Keith Richards, Lou Reed, and Bob Dylan. His love for many styles lead him to work with the great banjo legend Eddy Davis as well as New Orleans jazz enthusiast Woody Allen, an association that continues to this day. Greg Cohen also performs with avant garde/experimental artist John Zorn. With a variety of artists, his bass playing has been heard all around the globe.

Simon Wettenhall was born in Australia and started his study of music with the piano. Hearing a recording of the legendary Louis Armstrong began his lifelong passion for the trumpet. After studying with two Australian masters of the orchestral trumpet, Wettenhall eventually found himself exploring the earlier music of New Orleans, the city that is unequivocally the birthplace of jazz.

His devotion to the trumpet and early jazz lead him to become a member of the Woody Allen New Orleans Jazz Band, but along the way he has been involved with a diverse variety of groups including Niaggra, the Oceanic Orchestra and many others. A man dedicated to his craft, he also expresses himself by composing and recording his own work.

With the Woody Allen New Orleans Jazz Band, Simon Wettenhall's trumpet and voice have been bringing the traditional music of New Orleans to music venues around America and Europe. Listen to his story and hear for yourself the wonderful music this band is perpetuating and perserving.

Introducing John Gill, drummer with the Eddy Davis & Woody Allen New Orleans Jazz Band! John Gill is one of those people who is a complete music lover. Growing up in New York City, John Gill’s eclectic musical tastes ranged from country singers like Gene Autry to greats like Liberace. Music has brought him to live and perform in many different parts of America, from San Francisco to New Orleans where has has played everywhere from the French Quarter’s Bourbon Street bars all the way to the famed Preservation Hall. John Gill’s interest in jazz is in the traditional form, and his playing and grasp of the New Orleans style earned him a spot in the Woody Allen and Eddy Davis New Orleans Jazz Band, with which he performs every Monday evening at the Carlyle in New York City.

In addition to drums, Gill plays trombone, banjo, and guitar. His love of music runs deep and with several groups (including The Jazz Kings, the Yerba Buena Stompers, the Delta Stompers) he has recorded and preserved older styles of jazz that is sadly becoming more and more rare. Of English heritage, but born in Africa, Conal Fowkes has studied many styles of music from around the world. having spent much of his childhood in Mexico, he was influenced by many Latin styles (Musica Tropical). Conal Fowkes plays the piano with the Woody Allen New Orleans Jazz Band, but is also a vocalist, double bassist and music teacher. He is an advocate of the Tin Pan Alley style of songwriting and has released "Dizzy Fingers," a solo album covering these songs.

Bob Vernon began his journey into music with the drums. He has produced and engineered the recordings of artists like Elvis Presley, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Hank Williams Jr., Sam and Dave, Ray Charles, Paul Shaffer and the Neville Brothers. Vernon founded the Louisiana Music Association and also served as manager of the legendary Fats Domino from 1983- 1990. Songstress Sarah Tollerson has earned the praise of a past president of the Georgia Music Industry Association, a growing number of fans, performances in countless venues from Atlanta, Georgia to Boston, Massachusetts and a debut record, "Keeping Old Love Letters." Cutting her teeth in the so-called "Classic City" in Georgia (Athens, home of REM and the B-52s) Tollerson grew up in a musical household. Her father Thom Tollerson owns the historical music venue 106 West in Winder, Georgia and was in a folk trio with the Original Reeferett Deborah McColl. Her pop and blues acoustic stylings were long a solo performance, but in 2005 she found herself fronting her band, known to fans as "The Big Fantastic." We welcome back the Father of Modern Calypso--Mr. Irving Burgie to Time After Island Time. Irving Burgie, or as he is sometimes known Lord Burgess, wrote many classic songs of the Caribbean such as Day-O, Jamaica Farewell. Burgie composed some 34 songs for the Legendary Harry Belafonte including 8 of the 11 songs on Belafonte's classic Calypso album. From 1956 to 1957, "Calypso" was the first album of any kind to sell One Million copies. He also wrote songs for the Kingston Trio during the group's heyday. Everyone has heard Irving Burgie's music...at concerts and sporting events all over the world. His songs have been recorded by too many artists to even name. We are elated to be welcoming one of the most famous Calypsonians of all time, and one of the most important figures in all of popular music. Mr. Irving Burgie, or as he is known to many throughout the world Lord Burgess is an inductee of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, his songs have sold over 100 million copies worldwide. His most successful song Day-O was written for Harry Belafonte and was named Song of the Century. Burgie wrote 8 of the 11 songs (including Jamaica Farewell and I Do Adore Her) on Harry Belafonte's classic Calypso album. It was 1956 and the record became the first in history to sell 1 million units and was number one on the Billboard charts for 32 weeks. He went on to write 34 songs for Harry Belafonte as well as a few for the Kingston Trio. He joins us to talk about his life, his music and his book Day-O: An Autobiography of Irving Burgie. The book has been praised by the likes of Maya Angelou, Sidney Poitier, and Whoopi Goldberg. He has been a member of Jimmy Buffett's Coral Reefer Band since 1983 and fronts the band Club Trini along with partner and friend Michael Utley. He is a member of the Trinidad-based steel drum band The Desperadoes and is also a solo artist. This is the story of Robert Greenidge, a man who has lived by and for the steel drum. He comes from a political background, spends a great deal of time in New England and down in the Florida Keys. Kirby served as guitar technician for Jimmy Buffett's Barometer Soup album, and even inspired one of the songs of that album. He is a good friend of musician and Coral Reefer Peter Mayer whom he has written songs with and in fact is a member of Mayer's Little Flock Music label.
